![]() ![]() “ Grown Ups 2” could’ve and should’ve been disastrous, not as bad as Randy Cordova made it out to be and I was honestly expecting, at the same time I didn’t expect a brilliant laugh out loud movie that Gleiberman liked, honestly it is between the two. Sandler regular Steve Buscemi pops up again as O’teri’s husband, Dan Patrick has another cameo, and there is Shaquille O’Neal who is fulfilling his dream of being a police officer. Andy Sandberg, Taran Killan as car wash cheer leaders (don’t ask seriously, don’t ask) Jon Lovitz drops by with a variation from his “Wedding Singer” character. What we do get cast wise is a lot of different era Saturday Night Live Cast Members from the Sandler era such as Tim Meadows, Ellen Cleghorne, and Colin Quin, Cheri O’teri has a bit role as Lenny’s girlfriend from growing up that misses the mark. ![]() That is the whole ‘plot’ of the film, and that’s ok, we get a few sight gags that reminds the audience why we love Adam Sandler and his brand of comedy in the first place. Life in Stanton is different if the school bus driver ( Nick Swarsdon) is having an adverse reaction to his medication, no problem Lenny to the rescue, instead of dealing with his wife’s desire to have a fourth child, he would rather hang out with his friends dropping the kids off on their last day of school and maybe having a summer party at his place. Eric Lamsonoff ( Kevin James) his wife Sally ( Maria Bello) & their children, Eric is hiding the fact that he is spending time with his mother eating lunch and watching soap operas during the day instead of running his auto detail shop, then there is Marcus Higgins ( David Spade) who well works occasionally around town, gets the shock of his life that he is a Dad and is at the train station waiting to meet the man giant that is his son Braden ( Alexander Ludwig). Turns out the Fader’s moved back from Hollywood to the town (Stanton) Lenny grew up in to be closer to his friends Kurt McKenzie ( Chris Rock) & his wife Deanne ( Maya Rudolph) & their children turns out Deanne forgot that it is their 20th wedding anniversary. Anyhow the deer gets spooked lifts it’s hind quarters and panic wizzes all over poor Lenny before rampaging through the house. With “ Grown Ups 2” there still is no plot and I almost walked out from the opening frame, featuring a deer in Sandler’s bedroom where he & Salma Hayek as Lenny and Roxanne Felder a couple that couple only be possible in the movies, even Sandler knowingly says this later on with a wink to the camera. Then Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly, gave the film a “B” and in the review he stated that the first film was unfairly trashed, which begs the question does Glieberman have a financial stake in the film’s success? & did he actually watch the first movie? Because that movie couldn’t get trashed enough, the ‘film’ is virtually laugh free, and I like a majority of Sandler’s films, the first movie is easily right above “ That’s My Boy” which is just a catastrophic miss fire concerning the ‘plot’ of that movie. ![]() Then there is “ Grown Ups 2” a movie I honestly had no desire to see especially after watching the trailer, initially my fears that the movie was even more dreadful was right when Randy Cordova of the Arizona Republic just blasted a hate letter as his ‘review’ of the film. I had almost given up on Sandler especially after “ That’s My Boy” which did have one good sight gag involving public urination and a shot gun, where as “ Grown Ups” had nothing and to make matters worse, he had a ton of friends from his “Saturday Night Live” days helping out, it was a ten to one sketch that went nowhere, it was two hours of Sandler, David Spade & Kevin James collecting a giant paycheck at our expense. Sometimes the formula is complete crap look at “ Little Nicky” “ That’s My Boy” & “ Grown Ups“. I don’t know what to make of Adam Sandler’s filmography, he has a formula and sometimes it works very well, look at “Happy Gilmore” & “The Wedding Singer” simple premises, where Sandler is the same lovable misunderstood underdog. ![]()
